Paturel equals best moto result in MXGP final

At the final round of the 2020 World motocross championship Benoit Paturel recorded a strong first moto coming home 8th. He was unlucky in the final race but team mate Dylan Walsh delivered a solid performance in his ultimate sprint of the season. Walsh finished 13th after crossing the line 19th in the opener.

The scenic 'Crossodromo Ciclamino" in Pietramurata was once again the setting for more MXGP racing. In the morning’s time practice session Paturel and Walsh respectively managed the 16th and 18th time.

The good feeling Benoit had experience in qualifying was confirmed in the opening race. Although he started just inside the top-15 he quickly charged into the top-10. Halfway through the race Paturel claimed at 8th with 7th placed Clément Desalle in his sights. The JM Honda Racing rider remained consistent until the end to score his second top-8 finish of the season after 'Kegums 1' in August.

In the second moto things didn’t go as planned for the former MX of Nations champion. Benoît made a few mistakes, slightly injured his shoulder early on and decided to pull in after six laps. Even when he was sidelined for quite some time the likeable Frenchman managed to underline his potential in the MXGP class this season.

Dylan Walsh rode his JM Honda CRF450R to a good start in the first moto but lost valuable positions when he was held up by a fallen rider in the second corner. Early in the race the stylish Kiwi had worked his way into 12th right behind his team mate Paturel. A crash in lap four relegated him to P21 but Dylan eventually bounced back to 19th.

However the British MX2 champ succeeded in finishing the season strongly. Walsh overcame a midpack start to fight his way up to 12th after 6 laps. Although he lost one position to home rider Alessandro Lupino in the second half of the race he did end his rookie MXGP season on a positive note by scoring his third top-13 placement.

Benoit Paturel: “In the end I’m really happy about today. The first moto was a very good performance to come back to P8 after a start in 15th. I proved that I have top-10 speed especially after missing so much bike time this is very encouraging. The second moto was not ideal as I hurt my shoulder a little bit. Not to risk further injury and endanger my winter preparation I decided to retire. We couldn’t build up to the results we we had in mind this season, still the speed was there and I hope we can prove what I can really do next year! A big thank you for all the awesome work the team has put in his season.”

Dylan Walsh: “I was able to finish my GP season with a pretty decent ride today. But the whole week here in Trentino was up and down. Obviously it was great to get more riding in but unfortunately there were some mistakes and I wasn’t always able to keep it on two wheels. Jumping into the season half way through and not being prepared for it was hard. Probably harder than we anticipated. I can’t thank the JM Honda Racing crew enough for helping me out and giving me an awesome opportunity. ”
