Complicated day for Dylan Walsh in Spain

The 12th round of the MXGP world championship was a complicated one for JM Honda Racing. The team’s lead rider Dylan Walsh had a tough day in Arroyomolinos and DNF’d in both motos. Team mate Artem Guryev achieved his personal best scoring two world championship points at the brand new Intu Xanadu race track.

The MXGP fraternity was entering unchartered territory today as no one had ever raced the rutted hard pack clay track before. With limited track time before both motos the riders had an entirely new kind of challenge on their hand. Walsh eventually qualified 18, while Guryev rode more carefully and ended up 22nd.

Although we’ve become used to Walsh getting strong starts on his JM Honda Racing CRF450R the talented Kiwi once again got out of the gate impressively. Third going into the second corner Dylan circulated inside the top-10 for the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately the British MX2 champ hit a rock in one of the ruts which damaged his rear sprocket and caused the chain to come undone.

After a decent start around P15 Guryev went down early on. The #555 JM Honda Racing was relegated to a comeback race from that point on, nevertheless he picked up his first point of the season. Race two started promising again for Dylan. From just outside the top-10 he pushed on to eighth but crashed out of the race on the wave section. Starting from the outside Artem showed the power of the HGS Exhausts equipped bike too! Guryev was just inside the top-10 however the resolved Russian got caught up behind two fallen riders. Although he lost much ground Artem kept pushing and crossed the line 20th for the second time.

JM Honda Racing will race at home for the next three rounds as the FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Lommel, Belgium.

Dylan Walsh: “Not so much to say after today I’m afraid! Although I have to say I enjoyed racing on that track. Moto one was going quite well until I had this issue with my chain. Early on in the second moto I was just behind Desalle gunning for 7th when the drama happened… Not how I wanted to end my day here, but luckily nothing too serious either.”

Artem Guryev: “Finally my first points! Let’s hope we can turn this into a habit from now on. Not the easiest day as the track was quite tricky and very different from the previous races. It was a pity I got caught behind these two riders who ran into trouble early in the second moto, I lost a lot of time but my start was really good. This has been a step in the right direction but I would even be more happy if we can score points at every round!”
