Benoit Paturel heading into the right direction

The second round of the Trentino triple header took place at the scenic 'Crossodromo Ciclamino' yesterday. While Dylan Walsh continued to up his MXGP race pace -and scoring his best qualifying position of the season- it was Benoit Paturel who was the standout JM Honda Racing rider. The fast Frenchman rode his CRF450R to 12th in race two.

Walsh started his day in excellent fashion. With a terrific P9 in time practice -only 1,2 seconds down on polesitter Jeremy Seewer- Dylan confirmed his growing confidence. Even when Paturel posted the 18th time his 2,3 second gape to the fastest time was another testimony of the marginal differences in MXGP in general and at the slippery Pietramurata track in particular.

After a bad start in moto one, Walsh fought hard to catch up. By the the third lap the British MX2 champ had climbed up to 12th. Unfortunately Dylan couldn’t keep up the same high pace in the second half of the race and dropped back to 16th.

Race two started with typical “DW53” fireworks. The New-Zealander took his Honda to another holeshot but the moto was brought to halt due to a red-flag situation on the opening lap. A less effective getaway in the restart and a stalled engine in the second half of the moto resulted in a disappointing P21.

JM Honda Racing team mate Benoit Paturel suffered a complicated opening sprint. Benoit started mid-pack however a first lap crash relegated him to last. Although the former MX of Nations champion showed good speed he had to settle for 24th in the end. Considering his limited time on the bike since returning from the back injury Paturel sustained at Kegums 3 the final moto was definitely a breakthrough. He started in 14th on lap one but rode consistently in until 3 laps before the end. Eventually Benoit crossed the line in 12th.

The final round of the 2020 FIM MXGP world championship will see the JM Honda Racing squad line up one more time in Trentino.

Benoit Paturel: “Yesterday was quite positive for me. The first moto was difficult because I had a crash on the first lap and couldn’t find a good rhythm after that. In the second race I made my way into to the top-10. Unfortunately I had a bit of a stomach problem that knocked me back in the last five minutes. For sure the overall result could have been better but I’m happy with the progress we made and I’ll give it me best for the last GP on Sunday.”

Dylan Walsh: “I started the day well with a good feeling in time practice. Not the best start in moto one but I worked my way through well but got tired at the end. In the second race I pulled the holeshot but the race got red flagged after 1 lap. On the restart my start wasn’t as good but I managed to bounce back, unfortunately I ended up stalling it and not finding my flow again.”
